The Primordial God of the Sea
As a primordial god, Pontus was one of the first deities to come out at the beginning of creation. He is credited with having the power to make everything that exists on earth come to life.
In Greek mythology, Pontus is known for being the father of various sea creatures. These include the Sirens, Grey Sisters and Gorgons.
According to Hesiod, Pontus was born in the void state of Chaos. He was the first water god and the son of Mother Earth, Gaea.
His wife was Thalassa, the primeval spirit of the sea. They had two daughters, Ceto and Phorcys.
He is also the father of many old sea deities and fearsome sea monsters that still roam the Mediterranean Sea today.
Aspects of the Primordial God of the Sea
In Hesiod's Theogony, Pontus is referred to as "the fruitless deep," which is a very interesting tidbit. This is a great example of how the Greeks saw the sea as being a very important part of the natural world.
The province of Pontus existed in Asia Minor and covered a large area along the south shore of the Euxine Sea. It grew in importance throughout the centuries. It was divided into several regions. The eastern half was for administrative purposes united with Bithynia. The southwestern part was incorporated with Galatia.
